It's a sad situation when we must write a blog post like this one. Unfortunately, home security has become an issue in recent years.
One of the most important conversations we have with homeowners isn’t about square footage or interest rates—it’s about safety. Your home is your sanctuary, and while none of us like to think about home invasions, we always encourage my clients to take proactive steps. A secure home not only gives peace of mind, but it also adds value when it’s time to sell.
Here are the strategies we recommend to our clients:
1. Reinforce Your Entryways
Most break-ins happen right at the front or back door. We advise homeowners to:
• Install strong deadbolts and reinforce strike plates.
• Consider smart locks that allow you to monitor and control entry remotely.
• Add security bars or dowels to sliding glass doors.
• Use security window film on windows and doors.
The right investment here goes a long way toward discouraging forced entry.
2. Make Your Home Look Lived-In
Burglars often target homes that look vacant. I tell clients:
• Use timers or smart plugs for lights, TVs, or even a radio when you’re away.
• Avoid letting mail or packages pile up—ask a trusted neighbor to help out when you travel.
• Keep blinds angled so light shines in, but valuables stay hidden.
• Leave exterior lights on all night.
3. Use Smart Security Technology
Today’s systems are affordable and effective. Many of my clients love:
• Doorbell cameras for real-time alerts and footage.
• Security cameras that cover every side of your home.
• Motion-sensor lights that remove hiding spots at night.
• Full alarm systems that connect to your phone, giving you control wherever you are.
4. Keep Your Yard Secure
Landscaping can work for or against you. I recommend:
• Keeping shrubs trimmed away from windows.
• Adding path and entryway lighting.
• Installing gravel or motion-detecting alarms on walkways for extra awareness.
5. Lean on Your Neighborhood
One of the most underrated security measures is community. We often encourage clients to:
• Join a neighborhood watch or create an informal chat group with nearby homeowners.
• Share phone numbers with trusted neighbors for quick contact.
• Watch out for one another’s homes when traveling.
We've seen firsthand how a secure home can also be a selling point. Buyers love smart locks, security cameras, and well-lit yards — it signals not just safety, but a cared-for property.
